Scripps Howard Foundation has reaffirmed its commitment to its core values -- improving journalism, a free press, diversity, excellence and service -- as it moves into its 45th year. With support from The E.W. Scripps Company, the Scripps and Howard families, and Scripps employees, retirees and others, we stay focused on using our available resources to the very best advantage.
As we are open to new opportunities to be of service, we stay true to long-established, tried-and-true relationships, partners and programs.
The Foundation started in 1962 as a small organization dedicated to "improving journalism." Today, resources have expanded but so has the mission. We're the largest corporate foundation in Greater Cincinnati, living on the income from our endowment and on generous contributions from our supporters. We have an active board of 18 trustees and a staff of seven.
In addition to our traditional Journalism Fund, which reflects the modern media environment, we are also responsible for the Company's corporate contributions through our Greater Cincinnati Fund and for general charitable giving in all Scripps communities through our Community Fund.
Though the future is a moving target -- as the old saw goes, "The trouble with our times is that the future isn't what it used to be" -- we still think a lot about it. We invest in programs that will equip student journalists to deal with their own futures -- internship grants, the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications at Hampton University, the Roy. W. Howard National Collegiate Reporting Competition, the Semester in Washington program, a Top Ten Scholarship program, the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University and the new Scripps College of Communication, new initiatives in Hispanic journalism, and quality programs for mid-career journalists, like the Scripps Howard Institute on the Environment at Florida Atlantic University, to name a few programs. And we invest in charitable organizations in Greater Cincinnati and in Scripps communities that improve quality of life to assure a brighter future to all Americans.
We really
do believe we can make a difference, and we strive to apply
our available resources accordingly.
