Scripps Howard Foundation to sponsor search for "Most Valuable Staffer" college broadcast staffer
CINCINNATI -- The Scripps Howard
Foundation, in partnership with College Media Advisers Inc.,
is accepting nominations for the annual national competition
to identify five outstanding college broadcast station staff
members.
Five winners will be selected, each receiving
a $5,000 scholarship. Winners also will receive an all
expenses paid trip to Kissimmee, Fla., for an awards
presentation during the Fall National College Media
Convention, co-sponsored by the Associated Collegiate Press
and College Media Advisers, Oct. 31-Nov. 3. The broadcast
stations where the students work will each receive a matching
$5,000 grant.
"Our intention in sponsoring this
competition is to recognize the accomplishments of students
who contribute the most to their campus broadcast stations,"
said Judith G. Clabes, president and CEO of the Scripps Howard
Foundation. "It doesn’t matter whether they’re on-the-air or
working behind the scenes. We want to acknowledge the efforts
and hard work of staffers who excel at getting the job
done."
Jenny Tenpenny Crouch, president of College Media
Advisers and publications adviser at Middle Tennessee State
University in Murfreesboro, Tenn., said, "By co-sponsoring
this competition, we’re able to identify and reward the most
deserving college broadcasters and the stations for which they
work. It’s an excellent opportunity to help further the
careers of the nation’s future broadcasters."
Winners
will be chosen by a three-judge panel, including a
representative from College Media Advisers, Scripps Howard
Foundation and a professional at-large.
The competition
is open to any member of student-operated college radio or
television stations licensed for broadcast by the Federal
Communications Commission or available campus- or
community-wide via a closed circuit system.
The nominee
must be a full-time freshman, sophomore or junior in good
standing. Nominees do not have to be journalism or
communications majors. Winners must be enrolled in an
undergraduate program in the fall of 2002, when the award will
be made.
Entries must be postmarked by May 17. Winners
will be announced by Sept. 3.
The nomination package
should include a resume; a portfolio tape consisting of at
least three examples of the student’s work; a letter from the
applicant explaining his/her philosophy of what a student
operated station should be and how his or her contribution has
helped the station; a 500-word essay posing and defending a
position on a broadcast industry problem or issue; a
transcript of college course work; and station
documentation.
The station documentation, not to exceed
10 pages, should include the station philosophy or mission
statement; explanation of station hierarchy; summary of the
station’s program offerings; description of the station’s
technical facilities; an accounting of service to the academic
department or student media, college or university and the
