Scripps Howard Foundation names "Top Ten" scholarship winners
CINCINNATI -- The Scripps Howard
Foundation today awarded $100,000 in scholarships to 10
college journalism students from across the U.S. who were
nominated for the foundation’s Top Ten
Scholarship.
Each of the students will receive a
$10,000 scholarship. The scholarship is a one-time award
covering a full academic year.
"The foundation’s Top
Ten Scholarship program was created to identify and reward the
brightest college journalism students in the country," said
Judith G. Clabes, president and CEO of the foundation. "This
year’s scholarship winners have outstanding academic and
professional credentials and represent a very bright future
for journalism in America."
The winners were selected
based on academic achievement and a demonstrated interest in a
career in journalism. They also were required to submit a
personal essay emphasizing their long-term goals. A special
scholarship committee of industry professionals selected the
winners.
The "Top Ten" scholarships are offered
annually to full-time students entering their junior or senior
year. To qualify, students must be enrolled for the full
academic year in any journalism discipline. Students are
nominated by the colleges and universities they attend.
This year’s "Top Ten" winners
are:
Nora Fatima Achrati, University of Maryland. Achrati, a junior from Silver Spring, Md., will work this summer as a reporting intern at The Philadelphia Inquirer. She also worked as a reporting intern this spring at The Baltimore Sun. She is majoring in print journalism with a concentration in biochemistry.
Patricia A. Brandl, University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Brandl, a senior from Fond Du Lac, Wisc., is a non-traditional student studying journalism with a news/editorial emphasis. She returned to college after a 25-year career in the salon business.
Janelle Cogan, University of Missouri-Columbia. Cogan, a junior from Arlington Heights, Ill., is a copy editor for the Columbia Missourian, the university’s student newspaper. She also has worked as a public relations intern for the University of Missouri-Columbia News Bureau since January.
Eric Dean Duffee, Drake University. Duffee, a senior from Boone, Iowa, is a sports photographer, reporter and anchor for KDSM-TV in Des Moines. He also is an executive television producer and radio and television sportscaster for the university’s Drake Broadcasting System.
James Robert Giza, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Giza, a senior from Baltimore, has interned the past two summers as a sports reporter for The Baltimore Sun. He also is a senior sports writer for The Daily Tar Heel, the university’s student newspaper.
Kevin J. Graham, University of South Florida. Graham, a junior from Summerfield, Fla., is editor in chief of The Oracle, South Florida’s student newspaper. He also is editor in chief of static magazine at South Florida.
Tracy Kershaw, University of Kentucky. Kershaw, a senior from Hazard, Ky., is managing editor of the university’s student newspaper, Kentucky Kernel. She worked as a reporting intern for the Scripps Howard Foundation Wire in Washington D.C. during the summer of 2001.
Lynn Bich-Thuy Nguyen, University of Oklahoma. Nguyen, a senior from Oklahoma City, is a student media designer who creates promotional materials for the university’s student media, including The Oklahoma Daily newspaper and the Sooner yearbook.
Chaundra Perkins, Florida A&M University. Perkins is a senior from Hollywood, Fla., studying journalism. She worked as a reporting intern for the Lancaster (Pa.) New Era during the summer of 2001.
Wailin Wong, Northwestern University. Wong, a senior from Glen Ellyn, Ill., is assistant editor of the Mustardseed Christian Magazine and has served as assistant campus editor of The Daily Northwestern, the university’s student newspaper. She is working this spring as a reporting intern at The Orange County Register in Santa Ana, Calif.
