Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications
Hampton University

The Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications at Hampton University, in its sixth year, is a bright light in an industry eager for diversification -- and on campus, where it now has the largest enrollment of any program at the university. Dean Tony Brown’s focus on excellence has resulted in higher admission and retention standards, a concentration on writing skills, and expanded internship opportunities for the students. Foundation grants this year have upgraded the broadcast studio and computer labs, engaged visiting professionals and provided scholarships and program support.

Scripps Howard Visiting Professional

Drew Berry has a way of lighting up a place, wherever he goes. A professional broadcast journalist who served as vice president and general manager of Scripps' WMAR-TV in Baltimore, Mr. Berry also served several terms as a Foundation trustee.

Today he runs his own broadcast talent agency and is the Foundation's Visiting Professional at the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications at Hampton University, a school founded on his watch as a trustee of the Foundation. His extensive involvement was a labor of love that now extends to teaching and mentoring Hampton students.

His leadership and commitment is a beacon to all and now especially to aspiring young communicators who are benefiting from his talent and experience -- and his particular dedication to young people of color. He really connects to students, and in turn those students rave about how his willingness to share makes him the perfect role model.

Scripps Howard Endowed Chair in Journalism

Will Sutton, former deputy managing editor of The News & Observer in Raleigh-Durham, N.C, and former president of the National Association of Black Journalists holds the Scripps Howard Endowed Chair in Journalism at Hampton University this year.

A graduate of Hampton, he brings an alum’s dedication to the communications program as well as his experience and extensive network in the industry. He is directing the Academy of Writing Excellence, a special program focusing on improving writing skills of communications majors. He will be teaching several classes, mentoring students, and coordinating workshops.

Scripps Career Days

Nineteen Scripps professionals spent two days on campus interacting with students, speaking to classes and providing a full menu of special workshops. E.W. Scripps Company President and CEO Ken Lowe presented a program on the future of the media, which was open to the public.
