Featured Grants

Religion, Journalism and the Spiritual Life, Columbia University
Religion touches lives. The Scripps Howard Program in Religion, Journalism and the Spiritual Life at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism helps journalists report about religion and its impact. The “Covering Religion” seminar, conducted by Professor Ari Goldman, took students on a “magical journey” to the north of India, a country steeped in religious tradition from March 7-19, 2007.

Follow the class on their journey, "Under the Bodhi Tree: Reporting on the Faiths of India", and read daily stories and photos.

Scripps Howard Institute on the Environment, Florida Atlantic University
In 2007, 24 experienced reporters were immersed in the “environment” during a weeklong Scripps Howard Foundation Institute on the Environment held at Florida Atlantic University’s School of Communication and Multimedia Studies. Headed by environment reporter-turned professor Neil Santaniello, the institute took reporters on a trek through Everglades National Park; snorkeling in Biscayne Bay; to a sugar farm in South Florida to hear a grower's perspective; Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refugee to examine water quality and invasive species; and more, for a close-up look at environmental impacts and wildlife habitats first hand. Along the way, they were exposed to expert speakers with a broad range of backgrounds.

For information about applying for the 2008 program (dates TBD), contact Neil Santaniello, FAU journalism instructor at 561-799-8047, nsantane@fau.edu or www.ces.fau.edu/scripps. Deadline to apply is March 15, 2008.

Scripps Howard Academic Leadership Academy, Louisiana State University
The Foundation and Louisiana State University’s Manship School of Mass Communication teamed up to build a model program that might address the dearth of leadership of journalism and mass communication programs. The first Scripps Howard Academic Leadership Academy was held in 2006 and 16 young academics and industry professionals were selected for a wide-ranging program aimed at leadership development, understanding the challenges of academic administration, examining the various pathways to and unique challenges of program leadership, exploring relationship-building, funding and fundraising, budgeting and diversity. The 2007 a
cademy was held June 3-7.

The concept was the brainchild of Manship School Dean Jack Hamilton and the program was coordinated by Associate Dean Anne Osborne.

For information about applying for the June 1-5, 2008 leadership academy program, contact Anne Osborne, associate dean of research and programs at LSU at 225-578-9296 or osborne@lsu.edu.
