Literacy Grants
The ability to read and write are essential life skills. Literacy impacts quality of life -- the ability to function in everyday situations, to be engaged in civic life, to secure a livelihood, to help a child with homework or to be fully integrated into the life of an adopted country.
A leader in the national effort to eliminate illiteracy, the Foundation established its Literacy Grants program in 1986. Since then more than $3 million has been distributed to literacy organizations in communities in which Scripps does business. We are committed to the vision of building a more literate community.
Grants are awarded for items such as GED testing; workshops and programs; computers and software; tutor training; and books.
Scripps newspapers, television stations, networks and the employees partner with their community's literacy organizations. Employees serve on literacy boards and volunteer as tutors. Scripps properties support literacy with editorials, house ads and public service announcements. They also host spelling bees, provide newspapers and technical support.
The Foundation does not accept grant proposals directly, but relies on the recommendation of the local Scripps executive to submit a proposal on behalf of the literacy organization.
