Stone Award
Honors
outstanding achievement in editorial writing. Entries will be
judged on general excellence, quality of writing, forcefulness
and importance to the public interest.
Open to any newspaper or wire service journalist for editorials published in print or print/online in a daily newspaper in 2007. Individuals only. No team entries. No college newspaper journalists are eligible. Signed commentary not eligible.
Entries should include 7-12 editorials. Editorials do not have to cover the same subject.
$50 entry fee. Prize is $10,000 and a trophy.
Human Interest Writing
Ernie
Pyle Award
Honors
newspaper writing that most clearly exemplifies the style and
craftsmanship of the late Ernie Pyle, who wrote movingly about
everyday people with everyday dreams. Human interest, warmth
and the faculty for telling a story rank high in the
judging.
Open
to any newspaper or wire service journalist for work published
in print or print/online in a daily newspaper in 2007. Individuals only. No team
entries. No college newspaper journalists are eligible.
Entries
should include 6-8 articles. Articles must have
byline.
$50 entry fee. Prize is $10,000 and a trophy.
Environmental Reporting
Edward
J. Meeman Award
Honors
outstanding environmental reporting. Award is given to
encourage journalists to help educate the public and public
officials on environmental issues. Results achieved by the
reporting may be included.

to any daily newspaper or wire service for work published in print or print/online in a
newspaper in 2007. No college newspapers are
eligible.
Entries
are limited to 15 items (a day’s presentation is one item,
even if made up of several pieces).
$50 entry fee. Prize is $10,000 and a trophy. Winner may be an individual or a newspaper, when a team effort is involved.
Public Service Reporting
Roy
W. Howard Award
Honors
outstanding public service reporting.
Results achieved by this reporting should be
included.

to any daily newspaper or wire service for work published in print or print/online in a
newspaper in 2007. No college newspapers are
eligible.
$50 entry fee. Prize is $10,000 and a
trophy. Winner may be an
individual or a newspaper, when a team effort is
involved.
Commentary
Honors
outstanding signed commentary. Entries will be judged on general
excellence, quality of writing, expression and thought,
clarity, tone and style.
Open
to any columnist whose signed commentary appears regularly in
a daily newspaper or is distributed by a syndicate or wire
service serving daily newspapers. For work published in print or print/online in 2007.
Individuals only. No team entries. Work published in college
newspapers is not eligible.
Entries
should include 7-12 items. Sponsoring letter must state frequency
of publication of the signed commentary.
$50 entry fee. Prize is $10,000 and a trophy.
Photojournalism
Honors
outstanding photojournalism in daily newspapers or newspaper-affiliated Web sites. Portfolios will be judged on overall
photographic excellence, keeping these five areas in mind:
journalistic content, technical photographic quality,
originality, diversity in topic and approach, and impact. The
award is for a published portfolio of work. A single photo
story or essay does not qualify.
Open
to any newspaper or wire service photojournalist for work
published in a daily newspaper or on its Web site in 2007. If
photographs have been distributed by a wire service or
used on a newspaper Web site, they will also be considered
published. Individuals only. No team entries. No college
newspaper photographers or freelance photographers are
eligible.
Entries
should represent a year of work and not exceed 7 items. A
picture story or essay counts as one item. No more
than 60 photographs can be in the portfolio. Sponsoring
letter from the photographer’s current supervising editor or
director must verify publication of the photography. Work must be submitted as orginally presented to the audience. If published in paper or online in color, it must be judged in color.
Present
your portfolio for digital viewing. Quality is important. Your
digital entry must be submitted on a CD-ROM and include: a
titled folder that includes all of the photographs saved as
150 dpi jpg files 5 x 7 inches; captions must be included for
every photograph in the file information area and included as
a separate text document in Simple Text of Microsoft Word; and
supporting items (optional): related Web links (URLs),
portable document files (PDFs), or tearsheets and Flash
files.
$50 entry fee. Prize is $10,000 and a trophy.
Business/Economics Reporting
William
Brewster Styles Award
Honors
outstanding business and/or economics reporting. Award
encourages journalists to help educate the public about the
free market economy, the business community, entrepreneurism,
monetary policy, investing, money management or any related
subject. It may be awarded for explanatory or expository
journalism or investigative reporting.

to any daily newspaper or wire service for work published in print or print/online in a
newspaper in 2007. No college newspapers are
eligible.

are limited to 10 items (a day’s presentation is one

Editorial Cartooning
Honors
excellence in editorial cartooning in a daily newspaper.
Judges will consider artistic ability, creativity, range of
topics or diversity of ideas and editorial quality.
Open
to any newspaper, syndicate or wire service cartoonist for
editorial cartoons published in print or print/online in a daily newspaper in 2007.
Non-animated cartoons published on a journalism media site are
acceptable. Individuals only. No team entries. No college
newspaper cartoonists are eligible.
Entries
should include 6-12 cartoons and be submitted on a CD-ROM. Include a titled folder with cartoons as 150 dpi jpeg files 5 x 7 inches. Also include a pdf of the page or Web link of the published item. Submit as orginally presented to the audience.

Investigative Reporting
Ursula
and Gilbert Farfel Prize
Awarded
in cooperation with Scripps College of Communication at Ohio
University, this prize honors substantive print reporting that
covers stories intelligently and completely and encourages
print media to pursue investigative reporting projects.
Open
to any newspaper, magazine or wire service reporter, team of
reporters or freelance journalist(s) for work published in print or print/online by a
daily newspaper or magazine or distributed by a wire service in
2007.
The
story or series must raise public consciousness and/or awareness about the topic. It must have been written as a result of extra effort on the part of the reporter, team or freelance journalist(s) to pursue an issue in depth.
Ideally,
the story or series will have exposed major issues or problems
such as improprieties or injustices, mismanagement, and/or
corruption. It should have provoked the public to recognize a
major wrong and raised public awareness of the
issue.
The
winner(s) will be invited to serve as a visiting
professional(s) in the Scripps College of Communication at
$50 entry fee. Prize is $25,000 and a trophy.
Washington
Reporting
Raymond
Clapper Award
Honors
a Washington-based daily newspaper or wire service reporter(s) for a story or
stories on any subject in the spirit of Raymond Clapper, who
was known for investigations of political corruption and who
wrote extensively on international issues. In his eulogy, it
was said that Clapper wrote “what were generally accepted as
the most objective, tolerant and understanding views on
national and foreign affairs.” Emphasis will be on fair and
painstaking reporting, good craftsmanship and work that
contributes to public enlightenment and a sound
democracy.

to any Washington-based daily newspaper or wire service reporter(s) for work
published in print or print/online in 2007. No college
newspapers are eligible.
Entries are limited to 6 items (a day’s presentation is one item, even if made up of several pieces). Entries can be a single story or series of stories.

Broadcast/Cable
Journalism
Excellence in Electronic
Media
Jack
R. Howard Awards
Honors
the best investigative or in-depth reporting of events broadcast or covered online
by television and radio stations or cable systems. Any program
or series of programs is eligible.
Open to any single radio or television station; any commonly-owned group of radio or television stations or cable systems originating programs; national television or radio network or cable system originating programs; national syndication or production company that produces programming primarily for broadcast use.
Categories are TV/cable and radio.
Entries must have aired initially during 2007 and must originally have been produced for broadcast, online or cable use. A synopsis with a description, objective, how objective was met, and the results must be included with each entry. Online material must include URL(s) for judges to review.
Radio
entries must be submitted on audio CD. TV/cable entries must
be submitted on 1/2” VHS cassette or DVD. Any program format
or length is acceptable. Entries for online coverage must include URL(s) for judges to review.
$50 entry fee. Prize is $10,000 and a trophy in each category. Winner may be an individual or a television station, radio station or cable system, when a team effort is involved.
New Media
Web Reporting Award
Honors
the news organization that demonstrates the best use of new
media technologies and innovative techniques to report on a
news story or news event while maintaining the highest
journalistic standards.
Open
to any news organization whose primary function is the
gathering and disseminating of news information to the general
public. The news story or event must have been originally
published online in 2007. Also open to organizations that
combine their traditional field with new media efforts or
organizations that focus solely on online formats. No college
news organization work is eligible.
Entries
must provide a URL(s) for judges to view the news story or
event. Entry must include a written narrative describing the
organization’s efforts, a description of the news story or
event and its components, original date published online, as
well as justification of why the entry should be presented an
award.
$50
entry fee. Prize is $10,000 and a
trophy.
Journalism Education
Charles
E. Scripps Awards
Journalism Teacher of the Year
Honors
an outstanding journalism teacher who has demonstrated
journalism teaching excellence on his/her own campus and
beyond.
Award
is given to recognize, reinforce and reward classroom teaching
excellence in the core areas of print, broadcast and online
journalism instruction: reporting, editing, journalism
history, media law, ethics or photojournalism. Award is given
in collaboration with the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass
Communication (AEJMC).
Open
to any journalism classroom teacher who is a full-time faculty
member of a bachelor’s degree-granting institution of higher
education in the
Nominations may be submitted by journalism and mass communication educators, professionals, students and/or alumni.
Nomination letter of no more than four pages should cover information regarding the nominee’s teaching excellence, impact on students and efforts to improve instruction in the core areas of journalism instruction. Up to four additional letters of support may be included. A recent copy of the nominee's vita is required.

Journalism Administrator of the
Year
Honors
a past or present administrator of a school or department of
journalism or mass communication who has provided vision and
leadership for the field through creativity and excellence in
administration.
Award
is given for a distinguished career or exceptional leadership
in a specific assignment with far-reaching impact. Award is
given in collaboration with the Association for Education in Journalism and
Mass Communication (AEJMC).
Open
to any administrator of a school, department
of journalism or mass communication of a bachelor’s
degree-granting institution of higher education in the
Nominations
may be submitted by journalism and mass communication
educators, professionals, students and/or alumni.
Nomination letter of no more than four pages should cover information regarding the nominee’s accomplishments and examples of outstanding administrative leadership advancing journalism and mass communication. Distinguished Service to the
First Amendment
Edward
Willis Scripps Award
Honors an individual or
an organization for distinguished service to the cause of the
First Amendment guarantee of a free press, including, but not
limited to, fighting the threat of censorship in America,
overcoming public uneasiness with regard to press credibility,
combating government secrecy at all levels, and instilling in
the public an appreciation of its need as well as its right to
know as guaranteed by the First Amendment.
Open
to any individual or organization. Nominations may be made by
individuals, news organizations or any interested party.
Entries may consist of articles published in print or print/online or broadcast materials, documentation of distinguished service or lifetime achievement, letters of recommendation or any other appropriate material.
A
sponsoring letter of nomination must be signed and enclosed
with the nomination materials. All nomination materials must
be submitted in one package.
No entry fee. Prize is $10,000 and a trophy.
College
Cartoonist
Charles
M. Schulz Award
Honors an outstanding college cartoonist.
Open to any student cartoonist whose cartoons were published
in 2007 in a college newspaper or college magazine in the
United States or its territories. Student must be enrolled in
same college for the 2007-2008 school year.
