Scripps Howard Program in Religion, Journalism
and the Spiritual Life
Columbia University

For 11 years, the Scripps Howard Program in Religion, Journalism and the Spiritual Life at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism, has helped journalists report about religion and its impact. In 2007 the “Covering Religion” seminar, conducted by Professor Ari Goldman, took 16 students to India, a country steeped in religious tradition.

The group visited: Baha'i Temple; Delhi, India's capital; Golden Temple, Sikhism's holiest site; the banks of the Ganges to see an evening prayer ceremony; Gateway of India and more. The program gives students a first-hand look at religion and the role it plays in local and global politics.

Building on the successes of earlier trips to Israel, Jordan, Russia and Ukraine, the two-week study tour provided an exploration of a host of faiths that are taking root in America: Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Zoroastrianism, Sikhism and Islam.
