Top Ten Scholarships Nomination Information

The Scripps Howard Foundation will award ten $10,000 scholarships in the fall of 2008 to students in any journalism discipline through our Top Ten Scholarship Program. An accredited or non-accredited school may request a nomination form by contacting Sue Porter, vice president/programs at sue.porter@scripps.com. Each school may nominate one student from their undergraduate program to compete for one of these scholarships. The selection process is of the school's choosing.

A nominee should be a full-time student in the 2008-09 school year and must be a U.S. citizen. The $10,000 scholarship will be a one-time award, covering a full academic term. It will be paid in two $5,000 grants, one per semester, as enrollment is verified. Previous Top Ten Scholarship winners are not eligible to compete.

The nomination process is simple. In one package include:

  1. Letters of nomination (at least one but no more than three) emphasizing the student's professional potential and leadership qualities;
  2. A 2-3 page personal essay by the student, emphasizing his or her long-terms goals;
  3. Work samples and/or evidence of internships or other demonstrated interest in a career path;
  4. Transcript of course work; and
  5. The completed nomination form.

Nominations should be postmarked by MAY 15, 2008. Address entries to:

Incomplete entries will not be judged. Judges reserve the right not to award all ten scholarships. If a winner does not return to school in the fall, the award will go to the next runner-up.

Every entrant will receive a letter of congratulations and a certificate from the Foundation that acknowledges their representation in the competition.

Winners will be notified by JUNE 30, 2008.

A press release announcing the Top Ten recipients will be issued SEPT. 29, 2008 and posted on the Foundation's Web site.
