Ted Scripps Environmental Fellowships

Funded by his daughter, Cindy Scripps, the Ted Scripps Fellows in Environmental Journalism at the University of Colorado at Boulder are moving into their second decade. In partnership with CU's Center for Environmental Journalism, the nine-month fellowships allow five working journalists an opportunity to deepen their understanding of environmental issues and policy through coursework, seminars and field trips in the region.

 

2007-08 Fellows

Bonnie-Sue Hitchcock is the Fairbanks reporter for Alaska Public Radio Network where she covers issues affecting Interior Alaska and files stories for national outlets like "The Health Show" and National Public Radio. Her fellowship project will document the impact of development on native communities in the Arctic.


Sean Markey is a freelance journalist and photographer based in New Zealand. His work has appeared in The New York Times Special Features Syndicate, National Geographic, The Washington Post, Discover magazine and High Country News. Mr. Markey plans to write a series of magazines articles on how people's daily choices affect larger environmental issues.

 

Todd Neff is the science and environment reporter at the Daily Camera in Boulder where he covers everything from climate change and air quality to Nobel Prize winners. Mr. Neff has also covered business and technology as a freelancer and a reporter for Front Range TechBiz. He will begin work on a book about renewable energy technologies.

 

Joseph Sorrentino is managing editor of the Orange County Reporter, San Diego Commerce and Riverside Business Journal in Los Angeles. He is also a contributing writer for California Real Estate Journal. For his project, Mr. Sorrentino will write a series of newspaper articles on environmental justice issues in Southeast Los Angeles.

 

Florence Williams is a freelance writer and contributing editor for Outside Magazine. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, Wired, Mother Jones, The New Republic, and Los Angeles Times. She plans to write a magazine article about environmental toxins and their effect on reproductive and breast cancers.
